Beech Grove traveled to Crawfordsville Friday night for a homecoming matchup with the Athenians. Crawfordsville was hoping to earn their first victory of the season in front of the large crowd but it was not to be as Beech Grove used a 21 point second quarter in route to a 35-24 victory.
Crawfordsville got off to a strong start taking the opening kickoff and marching down the field for a score. Craig Fairley accounted for 58 of the 62 yards on the opening drive. Joel Hobson found Caleb Rasmussen for a 31 yard touchdown pass later in the first quarter putting Crawfordsville up 14-0.
Beech Grove senior running back Kyle Cruz got the Hornets on the board as the first quarter was drawing to a close with a 56 yard score past the Athenian defense.
Cruz added two more rushing scores of 14 and 7 yards and Jordan King hit Zach Ford for a 44 yard touchdown pass allowing the Hornets to take control of the game.
Fairley added another 7 yard rush for a score in the second quarter but Beech Grove’s scoring outbust sent them to the locker room with a 28-21 lead.
Another long pass touchdown from King to Ford, this one covering 43 yards, capped the scoring for Beech Grove on the night and Crawfordsville was only able to muster a 27 yard field goal from Matt Mummert in the second half.
Again, Fairley accounted for the lions share of the Athenian’s 255 total yards with 164 yards on the ground and 27 more through the air.
Crawfordsville drops to 0-5 on the season and heads to Tri-West next Friday in hopes of getting that elusive first victory.

I was also covering the half time homecoming festivities so was not able to shoot much of the game action and when I was shooting it seemed like every play the Athenians ran went up the middle or toward their bench which really limited my opportunities. I spent most of the night trying to get some shots of the defense and lineman to mix it up a bit.
