The fall sports season for the local teams has wrapped up and now it is on to the winter season.
The Crawfordsville Girls basketball team kicked things off for the season with their scrimmage against Covington. The Lady Athenians return to action after a record-breaking season last year where the captured both a sectional and regional championship before coming up just short in the semi-state which I firmly believe they would have won if not for an unfortunate ankle sprain by Lexi Stevens and an unhealthy Mandi Johnson.
The past is the past and regardless, Crawfordsville had an outstanding season and this season opens with lots of promise for another strong campaign. The Lady Athenians return five seniors along with a deep and talented pool of underclass players leaving coach Haas with many tough decisions on who to keep on the varsity roster. A problem I am sure many coaches wish they had.
Covington was the unfortunate opponent for the Lady Athenians who came out and steamrolled the Lady Trojans. While it was only a scrimmage which is played under different conditions than a normal game, Crawfordsville still put up nearly 90 points while holding Covington to under 10 on the night. While game was very lopsided, it did give the Lady Athenians lots of opportunities to try different player combinations and to work on their defense and transition games.
I love basketball season and am ready to see the other teams begin play. The Sagamore conference should feature several very strong teams with many great match-ups on the horizon.
