North Montgomery Boys Basketball vs Southmont

The North Montgomery Chargers and Southmont Mounties both opened Sagamore conference play as well as game one of the battle for the county championship Friday night at North Montgomery with the Chargers winning 69-53.

While the final score was not that close, the margin was really established in the first quarter. North Montgomery came out hitting from everywhere on the floor and Southmont seemingly could not hit anything, especially within 5 feet of the basket, and the Chargers jumped out to a 21-6 lead after one period. The remainder of the game was virtually even with the remaining three quarters all being decided by 2 points or less.

Field goal shooting was the Achilles heal for the Mounties who were able to put up 15 more attempts than the Chargers with both teams connecting on 21. The one bright spot for Southmont was sophomore Austin Burton who finished the night as the games leading scorer with 30, 21 coming in the second half, on 12 of 22 shooting including all five of the Mountie three’s. He was the only Mountie to finish in double digits.

North Montgomery had a more balanced scoring attack with four players finishing in double figures. Austin Krutzsch led the Chargers with 17 and was joined in the double digit scoring list by Jake Thomas (16), Colin Maltsberger (13) and Andrew Airey (13). Krutzsch also finished with a team high 10 rebounds and five assists.

Southmont won a close JV contest 45-41.

North Montgomery moves to 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in the conference while Southmont drops to 1-1 and 0-1 in the conference.
