North Montgomery played a solid game, controlling the tempo most of the night in route to a comfortable 59-47 victory.

The tone of the game was established on the first play from scrimmage as Crawfordsville sophomore starting quarterback Joel Hobson’s pass was picked off by Daniel Wodicka who [...]]]> The opening of the Sean Gerold era of Athenian football did not go as well as hoped as the visiting West Lafayette Red Devils soundly defeated Crawfordsville 39-7.

The tone of the game was established on the first play from scrimmage as Crawfordsville sophomore starting quarterback Joel Hobson’s pass was picked off by Daniel Wodicka who then switched to offense and led the Red Devils down the field for a touchdown.

Things for the Athenians did not improve on the next possession when they quickly returned the ball to West Lafayette with a fumble on the second play which led to another quick touchdown. Two possessions, three plays, two turnovers and a 14-0 deficit. Not what Coach Gerold and his coaching staff had planned.

Crawfordsville’s defense finally forced the Red Devils into a 4th down punting situation but Wodicka turned that into a first down on a fake punt. Wodicka then connected on a 41 yard strike to a wide open Aaron Woodard putting West Lafayette up 20-0 just 35 seconds into the second quarter. A 4-yard scamper by Wodicka and a safety resulting from a bad punt snap by the Athenians closed out the scoring for the half with the Red Devils taking a 30-0 lead into the locker room.

Raindrops were not all that was falling Friday night as it seemed like an Athenian player was down on the turf about every other play. The Red Devils aggressive, physical play took its toll on Crawfordsville.

Athenian senior Craig Fairley who took his fair share of abuse from the running back position took probably his hardest hit of the night while playing defense when he was blasted pursuing a play across the field in the second quarter.Fairley showed his toughness as he recovered from the hit and continued to play accounting for 146 of the Athenian’s 161 offensive yards on the night.

Hobson completed 3 of his 7 passes on the night, unfortunately 2 of them were to the Red Devils. While it was not a good night for Hobson, the experience playing against such a strong defense will do him good as the season progresses.

The Athenians will regroup this week and prepare for their Sagamore Conference opener next week when the Danville Warriors travel to Crawfordsville. Danville opened their season with a 30-14 loss at home at the hands of 4A Plainfield.
