North Montgomery Girls Varsity Basketball vs Western Boone

The 2010 sectional finals featured North Montgomery taking on Western Boone. Western Boone came into the game after a huge victory over Crawfordsville and were missing some of the fire they had in that matchup which allowed North Montgomery to really push them throughout the game. However, when the game came down to the wire, Western Boone stepped up and showed why they were undefeated in conference play and closed out the game strong with a 42-32 victory.

Congratulations to Western Boone and best of luck at Regionals.

Crawfordsville Girls Varsity Basketball vs Western Boone

Probably the most anticipated matchup of this sectional was this one. Crawfordsville and Western Boone have proven to be an outstanding matchup over the past few years and this game took on additional meaning as it also would determine the conference championship since bad weather forced the regular season final game between the two to be cancelled.

The game lived up to the high expectations and a very large crowd was on hand to witness it. Unfortunately for the Lady Athenians turnovers cost them their season as the Lady Stars won the contest 61-56.

Western Boone played an outstanding game and hats off to them on completing a perfect conference record. Maybe now, the state polls will finally recognize their accomplishments and give them the credit they deserve as a very good team.

On a personal note, the game was a sad one for me. Since returning to photography four years ago, I have spent a lot of time with this Lady Athenian team and have got to know many of the senior players and their families and will really miss them. Ladies, it has been my pleasure to get to know you and wish you all the best of luck.

Boys Sugar Creek Classic – Night 2

Monday night featured the consolation and finals of the 2010 Sugar Creek Classic, hosted by Western Boone.

North Montgomery and Southmont opened the night playing the consolation round. North Montgomery jumped out to a big early lead only to let Southmont make a great comeback in the second half. A solid 4th quarter by Austin Krutzsch allowed the Chargers to escape with a 66-56 victory.

Crawfordsville and Western Boone took the floor to battle for the the championship. Like the first game, Crawfordsville was able to jump out to an early lead. Unlike the first game, the Stars were able to make a strong comeback and hold on for a dramatic 66-63 victory. The win capped off a sweep of all four Sugar Creek Classic’s for Western Boone. The varsity girls won in November and both boys and girls JV teams were able to wrap up championships on Saturday.

Congratulations to Western Boone basketball on this impressive feat.

Boys Sugar Creek Classic – Night 1

After a one day delay due to the beautiful weather we have been experiencing, the boys Sugar Creek Classic was finally able to get underway on Saturday.

Southmont and Crawfordsville opened the night. Southmont played well but Crawfordsville’s hot shooting proved too much for the Mounties as the Athenians won 73-60.

Three time defending champion North Montgomery faced off against host Western Boone in the second game. The game provided to be an exciting matchup as it took overtime to determine a winner. The Stars were able to make sure that a new Sugar Creek Classic champion would be crowned this season as they sent the Chargers to the consolation round with a 58-55 victory.

Girls Sugar Creek Classic – Crawfordsville vs Western Boone

The championship game of the Sugar Creek Classic featured the #7 ranked Crawfordsville Athenians facing off against conference rival Western Boone. The two teams have developed a nice rivalry over the past couple of years with each winning a Sugar Creek Classic and Sectional championship and Crawfordsville holding a 3-2 advantage head-to-head. Saturday night’s final saw Western Boone even the head-to-head matchup 3-3 with a dramatic 50-49 victory.

Over the past three seasons, the Lady Stars have accounted for 3 of the 8 total losses for the Lady Athenians.

Western Boone controlled the game throughout the first half as their intense defensive pressure kept Crawfordsville from getting into any type of offensive flow. The Lady Athenians were held to only 4 points in the second quarter and the Lady Stars took a 22-14 lead into halftime.

Western Boone extended the lead to 28-18 early in the third quarter before Crawfordsville began it’s comeback.

Senior Alex Gasaway stepped up and showed why she is one of the top players in the area as she poured in 15 of her game high 19 points in the second half, many of which came on aggressive drives through heavy traffic to the basket. Her biggest shot was a huge three with 0.3 seconds remaining to draw the Lady Athenians to within one. From where I was sitting, I thought she also drew a foul on the shot but unlike the consolation game, no whistle was blown.

Crawfordsville was able to steal the inbounds pass but was unable to get off a good shot before time expired.

The Lady Athenians did a good job of containing Western Boone all-everything guard Brandy Woody from the floor, holding her to 3-13 shooting, but the scrappy senior finished 11-14 from the free throw line, including 6-6 in the critical 4th quarter.

Woody was named tourney MVP and was joined on the all-tourney team by teammate Sarah Brewer who finished the night with 12 points. Gasaway and Betty Elliott along with North Montgomery freshman Kelsi Byrd rounded out the all-tourney team.

Congratulations to Western Boone on their win.

Mark February 5 on your calendar now. Western Boone will travel to Crawfordsville for the final game of the regular season. Knowing Coach Haas and the Lady Athenians, they will be looking for revenge and the game should be another epic matchup of two very talented teams.

Below is a slideshow of some of my favorite images from the night. Unlike the Journal Review, these photos are from this outstanding game. I guess covering a championship game featuring two local schools is not worthy of their time. The grainy photo of a guy from a 5-7 football team kissing a bucket was much more “special”.

Girls Sugar Creek Classic – North Montgomery vs Western Boone

Friday night’s second game featured the host North Montgmery Lady Chargers squaring off against the Western Boone Lady Stars. The theme of the night for the Lady Chargers was turnovers as they committed nearly 30 of them allowing Western Boone to take command of the game in the second half on their way to a 61-46 victory.

North Montgomery and its freshman backcourt had their hands full as they were pressured by a stong Lady Stars backcourt led by Brandy Woody, my personal choice as the best guard in this part of the state and one of my favorite athletes to watch compete. After a shaky start, the Lady Chargers settled in and were able to have some success breaking the pressure and went into halftime only down 28-25.

Things took a turn for the worse in the third quarter as Western Boone had its best offensive quarter of the game while North Montgomery had its worst as the Lady Stars stretched their lead to 46-34 and never looked back.

The Lady Chargers were led by Kathryn Webster who finished with 14 points while Kelsi Byrd added 11.

Western Boone had three players finish in double digits, led by 19 each from Woody and Sarah Brewer and 15 from Jessica Walker.

North Montgomery drops to 1-1 on the season and Western Boone moves to 3-1 heading into Saturday nights final against Crawfordsville.

2009 Volleyball Sectionals

I covered the semi-finals and finals of the 2009 IHSAA volleyball sectionals held at Western Boone High School.

The day opened with the much anticipated matchup between North Montgomery and Western Boone and the game lived up to all expectations for a great match. The teams split their two earlier season matchups with North Montgomery winning in a tourney 2-1 and Western Boone sweeping the Lady Chargers 3-0 in the regular season conference matchup.

Western Boone came out firing winning the first two sets. North Montgomery rebounded winning the next two sets to set up a deciding 5th set. The set went back and forth until tied 10-10 and Western Boone then took control running of 5 straight points to win the match. It was a tough loss for North Montgomery and a big win for the Lady Stars.

Southmont and Danville then took the court for the second semi-final match and like the first match it took 5 sets to determine a winner. Danville jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Southmont responded to win the remaining 3 sets to reach the finals and face the host Stars.

In the finals, Western Boone’s power proved too much for the Lady Mounties as the Lady Stars rolled to a rather easy 3-0 victory to claim the sectional title.

Congratulations to the Lady Stars and best of luck at the regionals.

Below is a slideshow of some of my favorite images from the day. The Western Boone gym is not a fun place to shoot as the lighting is not very good but was able to come away with a few keepers. Due to the militant controls of the IHSAA, photos from this event are not for sale but hope you at least enjoy viewing them.

Crawfordsville Volleyball vs Western Boone

The Western Boone Stars volleyball team traveled to Crawfordsville for a Sagamore conference matchup with the Lady Athenians and left with a 25-12, 25-22, 25-22 victory.

The Lady Stars have a very impressive team and their size and power proved to be a tough matchup for Crawfordsville. A seemingly endless onslaught of hard spikes from Allison Nicley and Sarah Solomon constantly had the Lady Athenians on their heels and led to a pretty easy first set victory.

Crawfordsville was able to adjust to the speed and power of Western Boone and played them very close in both the second and third set. While the Lady Athenians may not be as big as some of the other conference teams, their athleticism and speed always keep them in matches.

The loss dropped the Lady Athenians to 15-8 on the season and 2-2 in the conference. Western Boone moves to 14-5 on the season and 3-1 in the conference.

39th Charger Classic Cross Country Meet

North Montgomery High School was the host for the 39th running of the Charger Classic cross country meet. Teams from 11 schools, including all three Montgomery county schools were in attendance for the big event. The race was a grueling 5k run around the large Charger grounds which is longer than I would like to walk, much less run.

The girls race was won in convincing fashion by Southmont junior Kylie Lippencott who finished the course with a career best time of 20:07. Lippencott beat second place finisher Case Boose of Rensselaer by 51 seconds and no other runner finished within a minute of Lippencott. It was the third year in a row a Mountie has won the event with Creasey Clouser winning the two previous races.

While Lippencott won the race, the team from Rensselaer won the meet finishing with 73 points. North Montgomery was the top pacing county school finishing 3rd with 118 points. Southmont finished 8th with 172 points and Crawfordsville finished 10th with 205 points.

The Rensselaer boys team totally dominated the course on the night led by Corey Dowds winning time of 17:14 and the team finishing with an astoundingly low total of 27 points. Four Rensselaer runners finished in the top 10. Hamilton Heights finished a distant second with 80 points.

Crawfordsville runner Tony Sturm was the top local finisher as he placed 3rd with a time of 17:30. John Lawson of Crawfordsville also earned a top 10 finish when his time of 18:14 earned him 7th place.

Tyler Davis’ time of 18:34 was good enough for a 10th place finish as the top Mountie runner on the night. Solid finishes by his teammates allowed them to finish 3rd in the team standings with 89 points followed by Crawfordsville who finished with 113 points. North Montgomery did not have enough runners to earn a team score and were led by Graham Lough’s 41st place finish.

Ever wonder how much paint it takes to paint the white line for the path around the course? Probably not, but now that I have you thinking about it the answer is 12 gallons. Thanks to Ed Stuffle, the man behind the Charger Classic, for finding out this information for me.
