The Athenians showed some moments of promise but it was not enough to stay with the Stars during their home opener. Western Boone played a solid game and will pose problems for the remaining SAC teams on their schedule.

I did not realize the scrimmage was going on so I missed most of the first half. I used the second half to experiment with some things so did not have very many final images.

The Mounties controlled the entire game against the Chargers and seemed to have North Montgomery off balance all night. A huge night on the ground with nearly 400 rushing yards by Southmont was very impressive.

The Mounties hosted a very strong and well coached North Putnam football team with North Putnam securing a convincing 35-14 victory. The Cougars are a strong team and should go deep in this year’s 2A playoffs. Wish I got to see them play more often.

The Chargers showed that they are loaded in their skilled positions and their line played a very solid game. One penalty, no turnovers, one punt and 46 points in the first half was pretty impressive. If only they would have sent players wearing football pants for my Journal Review football cover photo shoot, I would have considered it an outstanding week for North Montgomery football.

The Wabash Little Giants football team improved to 3-0 on the season with yet another stomping of an opponent as the easily defeated Kenyon 62-24 on Saturday. You can read the details of the dominating performance on the Wabash website by clicking here.
Below are a few things I did for the day. First is a detailed panographic image of the capacity crowd. This was made from 65 individual images. It is not perfect and you will find some odd things like people cut in half or showing up in multiple places. This is a result of the stitching process and the fact that you people did not see me waiving at you to tell you to hold still.
Use the ‘+’ and ‘- ‘ buttons at the left to zoom in and out. To move around the image when it is zoomed in, hold down with your mouse and drag the image as needed.
Hope you like it and good luck finding yourself in the crowd.

For those viewing this that are not familiar with Wabash College, it is a small, all male liberal arts college in Crawfordsville, Indiana that was founded in 1832. It is one of a very limited number of all male colleges left in the United States. It has 900 students and an endowment valued at $250 million, which is one of the highest per-student endowments in the United States and a student/faculty ratio of less than 10/1. The also love their Little Giant football team. Additional information for those who are interested can be found here.
Finally, I have been experimenting with the video capability of my camera and shot some clips of the pre-game festivities and made a simple music video from them. It is not going to land me at any film festival but was good practice with the camera. Hope you enjoy it.
Beech Grove traveled to Crawfordsville Friday night for a homecoming matchup with the Athenians. Crawfordsville was hoping to earn their first victory of the season in front of the large crowd but it was not to be as Beech Grove used a 21 point second quarter in route to a 35-24 victory.
Crawfordsville got off to a strong start taking the opening kickoff and marching down the field for a score. Craig Fairley accounted for 58 of the 62 yards on the opening drive. Joel Hobson found Caleb Rasmussen for a 31 yard touchdown pass later in the first quarter putting Crawfordsville up 14-0.
Beech Grove senior running back Kyle Cruz got the Hornets on the board as the first quarter was drawing to a close with a 56 yard score past the Athenian defense.
Cruz added two more rushing scores of 14 and 7 yards and Jordan King hit Zach Ford for a 44 yard touchdown pass allowing the Hornets to take control of the game.
Fairley added another 7 yard rush for a score in the second quarter but Beech Grove’s scoring outbust sent them to the locker room with a 28-21 lead.
Another long pass touchdown from King to Ford, this one covering 43 yards, capped the scoring for Beech Grove on the night and Crawfordsville was only able to muster a 27 yard field goal from Matt Mummert in the second half.
Again, Fairley accounted for the lions share of the Athenian’s 255 total yards with 164 yards on the ground and 27 more through the air.
Crawfordsville drops to 0-5 on the season and heads to Tri-West next Friday in hopes of getting that elusive first victory.

I was also covering the half time homecoming festivities so was not able to shoot much of the game action and when I was shooting it seemed like every play the Athenians ran went up the middle or toward their bench which really limited my opportunities. I spent most of the night trying to get some shots of the defense and lineman to mix it up a bit.
The Wabash Little Giants opened the 2009 season with a dominating performance beating Denison 56-7 at Hollett Little Giant Stadium.
It took the Little Giants 2:02 of the first quarter to storm 77 yards on only 5 plays to take an early 7-0 lead. Braden Layer of Denison then fumbled on the first play from scrimmage that was picked up by Matt Kraft and returned 26 yards for a touchdown and an acrobat, albeit penalized flip into the endzone. 2:16 seconds into the game and Wabash had already scored all the points they would need for the afternoon.
Wabash added another TD in the 1st and two more in the 2nd to head to the locker room with a commanding 35-0 halftime lead.
Denison managed to get on the board early in the 3rd but that was it for the day. Wabash tacked on two more scores in the 3rd and with a 49-7 spread, the second stringers got some valuable early season playing time.
The Little Giants racked up 532 yards of total offense on 80 plays while limiting Denison to six first downs and 139 yards of total offense with only 55 coming on the ground.
Matt Hudson had a solid afternoon at quarterback completing 16 of 27 passes for 254 yards and 3 touchdowns and only 1 interception that came on a hesitant pass as he was hit by the Denison defense.
Hudson’s favorite target on the day was preseason All-American Kody LeMond who hauled in 7 passes for 126 yards and two TD’s. My apologies to Kody as I gave up on shooting the play that ended with him making one of the nicest catches I can remember seeing. I promise to not give up on you ever again. Great catch!!
Tommy Mambourg led the way on the ground picking up 120 yards and a single touchdown. Wes Chamblee made the most of his two rushing attempts (42 yards and 20 yards) as both ended with him in the end zone. Kyle Stevens rounded out the scoring on the ground with a 2 yard run.
Wabash travels north to take on the University of Chicago next weekend and return to Hollett Little Giant stadium the following weekend for homecoming.

The North Montgomery Chargers continued to roll Friday night as they defeated the visiting Tri-West Bruins 49-19.
The Chargers, who have been plagued by injuries, made several adjustments to fill several key positions. While plagued with injuries, they are also blessed with a lot of depth as the faces may change but the results looked the same.
The Chargers racked up nearly 540 yards of total offense with it split nearly evenly between the running and passing game. Five different running backs contributed to the rushing game led by speedy sophomore Clay Birdsong’s 88 yards. Clayton Dale continued to efficiently lead the passing game completing 14 of his 20 passes yielding 4 touchdowns and a staggering 259 yards.
The one negative for the Chargers was they did allow Tri-West to make several big passing plays eating up a lot of turf with virtually every completion. Senior quarterback John Fredrick lit up the Charger secondary for 300 yards on only 16 completions accounting for all three Bruin touchdowns. All three touchdown passes went for at least 20 yards. Fredrick did pay for those yards as he was constantly pressured out of the pocket and took several very hard hits as he tried to make things happen.
The Chargers move to 4-0 on the year and are on a 13 game regular season winning steak. This will be put to the test next week when they travel to Lebanon to play the Tigers. Lebanon is now 3-1 on the season with their only loss coming to 5A powerhouse Carmel. The game will be a critical matchup on the road to the Sagamore Conference championship. North Montgomery and Lebanon are joined by an undefeated Western Boone team as the only conference teams without a loss yet this year.
Tri-West drops to 1-3 on the season and will host Southmont next week. Southmont beat Danville Friday night for the first time since Danville joined the conference and will be fired up for the game.
Below is a slideshow of my favorite images from the night. Since I already have what seems like 145,00 pictures of Clayton Dale and the multitude of running backs, I spent the first half trying to get more shots of the big men on the line. The second half was spent experimenting with different things in the darkness as the games with sunlight are quickly coming to an end.
