The Crawfordville Athenians used an early barrage of goals to take their 4th consecutive sectional in convincing fashion, defeating Southmont 7-1. I arrived just as the game was starting and by the time I had my camera out of the car and walked to my spot on the field the score was already 3-0 and the game was barely 10 minutes old. Crawfordsville continued to build on their lead and actually ended the game scoring all the goals as the only Southmont score came when Jordan Kiger could not stop a shot by his own teammate. Congratulations to the Athenians on the big victory. Below is a slideshow of some of my favorites from the match. The North Montgomery boys soccer team defeated the visiting Covington Trojans 2-0 Thursday night. I have been fighting bronchitis for over a week so only stayed for the first half given the cold, damp and windy conditions. I will be back to cover the Chargers when they take on Southmont next week and then again as sectional play gets underway on Thursday. Below are my favorites from my limited time at the match. The Wabash Little Giants soccer team hosted the 23rd ranked DePauw Tigers on Wednesday and battled them to a 2-2 tie. After a scoreless first half, the Little Giants nearly won the contest but lost a 2-0 lead after the Tigers were able to make the most of two restarts and score two goals to send the match into overtime. The second restart came with only 27 seconds remaining in the match and ended 6 seconds later with the tying goal. Austin Jennings and Mark Babcock povided the scoring for Wabash who moves to 2-3-1 on the season. I was only able to shoot part of the first half due to other commitments. The Crawfordsville boys soccer team earned a hard-fought 2-0 win Tuesday over the visiting Benton Central Bisons. The teams appeared to be evenly matched but the game was decided by the Athenian defense as any time Benton Central got the ball near the goal, Crawfordsville was able to take control and not allow the Bisons to get off a shot. The game was exciting to watch with lots of strong, physical play. I’m more of a contact sport guy and to see bodies banging and hitting the ground always gets me excited. I guess I need to learn more about the game because I thought that some of the calls, especially the yellow card on Matt Mummert in the second half seemed extremely minor compared with the overall physical style that was happening virtually everywhere on the field. Mummert got the Athenians on the board in the first half on a very nice goal off the assist from Brandon Largent. Austin Evans added a goal late in the second half to close out the scoring. The Athenians move to 7-3-1 on the year and return to action on Saturday when they travel to North Putnam. Below is a slideshow of my favorite images from the event. Here is something a little different than the normal varsity sports coverage you will find here. I was also covering the big cross country meet going on at North Montgomery so did not make it to the end of this match to know the winner but hope you enjoy the photos regardless. The Wabash Little Giants soccer team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 1-0 victory over visiting Alma as part of the Wabash/DePauw Soccer Classic. Sophomore Dylan Andrew’s first half header goal off of Ian Kelly’s corner kick proved to be all the offense the Little Giants would need for the day. Wabash returns to action on Sunday at noon when they host Elmhurst College in the second match of the Soccer Classic. Below is a slideshow of my favorite images from the event. The Southmont boys soccer team remained undefeated on the season after soundly defeating Crawfordsville on their home field 5-1. The win moves the Mounties to 3-0 on the year and 1-0 in conference play. Kyle Utterback and Chris Rash each provided two first half scores to give Southmont a comfortable lead early and Erik Garcia added a goal early in the second half to round out the scoring for the Mounties. Crawfordsville’s lone score came from James Miller later in the second half. Southmont will have to wait until the last game of the season to see if they can capture another Montgomery county title when the battle the also undefeated North Montgomery Chargers in what should prove to be another very competitive boys soccer matchup. The Southmont Mounties made easy work of Cascade on their home field winning 6-1. The Mounties controlled the ball and the tempo of the game throughout and attacked the Cascade defense repeatedly from many directions. Because no rosters were available at the game and have not been added to the SHS website, I am not sure who some of players are so am unable to write much of a summary. Oh well, you are here for the pictures anyway. Below is a slideshow of my favorite images from the event. Click here to view them as a gallery or click here to view all photos from the night.
The Crawfordsville boys soccer team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-1 victory over visiting Northview. The Athenians were led by junior Cole Priebe’s hat trick, two goals from fellow junior Matt Mummert and a score from Austin Evans. Mummert also contributed two assists for Crawfordsville who controlled the ball the majority of the game. Crawfordsville has good depth, speed and experience and should make a run at yet another county and sectional championship. Below is a slideshow of my favorite images from the event.
